First generic oral solution for feline hyperthyroidism receives FDA approval

A thin white cat.
Veterinarians now have a generic oral medication to prescribe and treat feline hyperthyroidism patients with.

Sponsored by U.K.-based Norbrook Laboratories Ltd., Felanorm has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), becoming the first generic methimazole oral solution for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats. The newly approved drug contains the same active ingredient (methimazole) as the approved brand name drug product, Felimazole Coated Tablets, first approved in May 2009.

As communicated by the FDA, Felanorm is only available by prescription from licensed veterinarians. Further, the agency advises “continued veterinary monitoring” is needed to ensure appropriate dosage given hyperthyroidism “can progress over time.”

Felanorm is supplied in 30 mL or 100 mL bottles, with a 1 mL dosing syringe.
